Edmund Kemper was destined to become what he became. He grew up in a home where his mother (notice a trend?) ridiculed him for his physical appearence and personality. As a natural reaction to the way he was treated, he grew to hate his mother and that hate carried over to women in general.
While in grade school, he began to show odd behavior. While most boys his age were playing cowboys and indians, Ed pretended that he was being executed via the gas chamber. In 2nd grade he developed a crush on his teacher. When he was asked why he didn’t kiss her, the young boy explained he’d have to kill her first in order to kiss her. All this before he ever hit his teens.
In 1963, at the age of 15, Ed was sent to live with his grandparents in North Fork, California. In August, for no real reason, he shot and killed his grandmother as she sat at the kitchen table. After he shot her, he then stabbed her and put her body in the bedroom. When his grandfather returned, Kemper shot him to death as he entered the house. After the killings, he called his mother and explained what he did. He then sat and waited for the police to arrive. When asked why he did it, he explained that “I just wondered how it would feel to kill Grandma.”
He was then committed to the Atascadero State Hospital where he was diagnosed as a schizophrenic. There he spent his time listening to the stories of his fellow patients who were serial rapists. This caused his fanaties to become even more violent. In order to get parole, he put on an act of bein “cured.” He of course hid his violent fantasies from his doctors and after 5 years he was released.
After his release he had no treatment. He was examined by the state board and they deemed him cured and sealed his juvenile record. Little did they know that inside the truck of his car was the head of 15 year old hitchhiker who he had killed, raped and dismembered the day before.
She wasn’t his first victims after being rehabilitaed. His first victims were roommates from Fresno State. He had picked them up in May and drove them to a secluded area. Once there, he stabbed them to death and placed them in the truck of his car. Once he returned home, he snuck the bodies into his bedroom where he took pictures of them and then had sex with the bodies. When he was done, he burried the bodies and tossed the heads into a ravine.
Six more women would fall victim to Kemper. Not only did he rape the dead, but he would include them in meals as well. He claimed to have made a casserole with one of the victims. He’d keep hair, teeth and patches of skin as trophies.
The most disgusting act was yet to come. On the day before Easter in 1973, Kemper snuck into his mothers home. Using a knife and hammer, he smashed her skull in and slit her throat. He beheaded her as well and then raped the corpse. He then placed the head on the mantel, using it as a dart board. Later that evening he invited over his mothers best friend. When she arrived, she met the same fate.
After fleeing to Colorado, he realized he had no where to go. He called the police and waited for them to arrive at the phone booth he used. Once in custody, Kemper offered up a full, detailed confession of his crimes. He was convicted of 8 counts of murder and sentenced to life in prison.
