Police seek help with notes claiming girl’s 1988 killing

My buddy Watchlist shared this article with me. The person who is claiming to have killed the young girl is leaving notes at the homes of other young girls boosting of the 1988 killing and rape of the 8 year old 1st Grader. The letters were written in 2004 and police are hoping someone out there will come forward with some information about the case. I know this isn’t a serial killing but it’s still interesting and I wouldn’t be surprised if perhaps this person has killed before/again. Below is the story:

Police seek help with notes claiming girl’s 1988 killing
FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Authorities on Monday sought the public’s help in finding whoever wrote a series of notes boasting of responsibility for the 1988 abduction, molestation and death of an 8-year-old girl.

The murder of April Marie Tinsley has gone unsolved since the first-grader disappeared April 1, 1988, while walking to a friend’s home near downtown Fort Wayne. Her body was found three days later in a ditch in rural DeKalb County, about 15 miles north of the city.

In the new plea for assistance, investigators released details of handwritten notes left in zip-closed plastic bags during 2004 at the homes of four young girls in and around Fort Wayne.

The note writer claimed to have killed April. The writer also threatened that if the notes did not receive news coverage, the girls who received them would become the next victims.

Investigators said the 2004 notes had similar writing, misspellings and wording as a message found in 1990 scrawled to the side of a barn in northeastern Allen County that said, “I kill 8-year-old April Marie Tisley I will kill again ha ha.”

Authorities had not previously released any information about the notes, but Fort Wayne Police Chief Rusty York said city detectives and FBI agents had been working on them since their discovery.

The decision to seek the public’s help was made with the FBI, and investigators would work around the clock if necessary on any new clues, he said.

“We think we have a lot of potential here. But we really have to mine that information,” York said. “We’d be remiss if we didn’t take this tremendous opportunity.”

Investigators hope someone will recognize the writing or the writer’s use of certain phrases. They also said it was possible someone had received another communication at work, from a neighbor, co-worker or relative that bears a resemblance to the writing.

York said it was also possible that the writer might have left other notes or graffiti in and around Fort Wayne that were not reported to police.

“It is understandable that a citizen finding such an item may not have recognized its significance because of the age of the Tinsley case and therefore may have discarded or even destroyed the note,” York said.

The following link will take you to a page that has more information on the letters themselves and even has photos of them and contact information incase you can help.

  1. It seems strange that the notes were received 2 years ago and they’re only now releasing the information.

  2. Yeah, the local talk radio peoples were all up in a buzz about that. My guess is that they maybe have another possible missing girl from that geographic region were the first girl got grabbed from back in ’88. If not that, they must have some other reason to believe that he is active again. The notes were left in a completely different area. They seem to be under the impression that the notes are being left (and poorly written) on purpose to throw everyone off. They’ve got the FBI in on the search now and it does sort of give the appearance and the authorities are grasping at straws.
